The former director of the Colegio Agustiniano in La Vega is being sued by a student. The school director, Catholic priest Miguel Bienvenido Florenzán Ulloa, is accused of sexual abuse. Graduate Victor Rafael Manón Arias had reported sexual abuse by the Catholic priest when he attended the school and when on a school trip to Argentina, but did not find any support in the psychology department or others at the school. He would decide to press his case after moving to the United States, where he was encouraged to take his case public.
Lawyer Carlos Salcedo is part of the board of lawyers carrying the case for Mañón. They are demanding RD$50 million and 20 years in jail for the priest for the moral and psychological damages against the young man and his family.
The case is heard by the First Collegiate Penal Court of La Vega. The judges are Lucrecia Rodríguez Ramírez, Luz Enilda Herrera and Juana Patricia Silverio. The court said it will announce whether the case will be heard in court on Monday, 25 November 2019.
