China wants to find Dominican business partners

The China Dominican Chamber of Commerce coordinated the Dominican Business Cooperation Meeting and Expo China 2019 in Santo Domingo 18-21 November 2019 at the Convention Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic. Manufacturers and traders, exporters and importers, service providers and distributors met with 26 leading Chinese companies that came for the Eighth China Trade Exhibition.

Roberto Santana, president of the China Dominican Chamber of Commerce, stressed that China can contribute to high quality development through trade, investment, the digital economy and connectivity in the country. Leading companies from the People’s Republic of China exhibited the latest products and technologies in the fields of infrastructure, electronics, telecommunications, machinery, public safety, construction materials and more. Chinese companies presented their solutions to citizen security, border control, coastal and forestry control, governance and green social development. He highlighted the advances of Chinese companies such as Huawei. Also participating were Power China, CEIEC, ZTE, AVIC, Beijing North Star, China Harbour, among others.

Speaking during the opening of the China trade show, Marius de León, director of the Dominican Republic’s Export and Investment Center (CEI-RD) said that the country is China’s largest trading partner in the Caribbean region. He said trade between the two countries had reached US$2.29 billion in 2018, according to the World Trade Organization (WTO) statistics.

De León said from January to August 2019, total exports of goods from the Dominican Republic to the world have grown by 2.2%, compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, Dominican exports to the Chinese market were up from US$64.9 million to US$270.49 million, for an increase of 315%.

“We urge our Dominican businessmen and exporters to take full advantage of the opportunities that this exhibition brings us, by strengthening commercial relations with the 26 Chinese companies that are exhibiting their products and services,” said De León.

Marius de León said that a mission from the Chinese National Center for Exhibition and Conventions (NECC) is visiting. He said they would be signing a collaboration agreement for a more focused organization of the Dominican Republic’s participation in the China International Import Exposition (CIIE 2020) with more companies, diversity of products, and sectors represented.
