The Voluntariado Jesús con los Niños (Jesus with the Children Volunteers) has issued a public statement on the conditions at the nation’s second-largest children’s hospital, the Arturo Grullón, the largest of its kind in the Cibao region. The Voluntariado has spent years working with children suffering from cancer, serious burns and other trauma. Xenia Gell de Alvarez, the president of the entity, spoke to reporters last week and revealed that only one of the eight surgical areas is functioning.
Gell said that the only functioning operating room is located between the infectious disease area and the morgue and that because of this location, many doctors refuse to operate there. She called on President Danilo Medina to pressure the Office of Supervising Engineers for State Projects (OISOE) to finish the renovations that were begun four years ago.
