OAS to supervise elections

The Organization of American States (OAS) will again participate as an observer in the municipal elections in February, and the congressional and presidential elections that will take place later in May 2020. The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Julio César Castaños Guzmán, was in Washington, D.C. to sign the agreement at the OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C. It will be the 17th time the OAS oversees a Dominican election.

Meanwhile, Orlando Jorge Mera, the representative of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) says the party is asking that the JCE invite the OAS and the civic watchdog group, Citizen Participation, to be involved in the auditing of the automated voting system prior to the 16 February 2020 municipal election.

PRM party president José Ignacio Paliza says the party wants the OAS to lead the auditing process. “They have done serious work in Bolivia and I think their specialized units could do the same work here in the country,” Paliza said.
