Military assigned to the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa) dismantled illegal fences that had been erected in the Félix Servio Ducoudray Park (Baní Dunes) in Peravia province. The president of the Baní Tourist Chamber, Juan Tejada, said that the illegal occupants were from nearby Matanzas. “What I can assure you is that none of the occupants has title to those lands,” he told El Dia. He said he is working with the Ministry of Environment to regulate the park and make it more attractive to tourist visitations.
However, Adalberto Arias, who presides over the Sociedad de Desarrollo Ecológico el Manaclar, warned that some of the occupants boast that they have authorization from the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD).
The actions were taken after the Baní Bishop Victor Masalles used his voice to protest the invasion of the protected lands.
