Leonel continues to allege electoral fraud

On Monday, 25 November 2019, former three-time President Leonel Fernández, told CNN en Español interviewer Camilo Egaña that Gonzalo Castillo is an illegitimate candidate given the fraud he allegedly carried out in the ruling party primary. Fernandez complained the fraud piggy-backed on the new automated system that was not audited before the primary. Castillo resigned from the position of minister of Public Works to challenge Fernández for the presidential candidacy of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party. Castillo has the backing of President Danilo Medina.

During his interview Fernández also referred to the evidence that the fraud occurred when thousands were allowed to vote after the pre-established closing time of the polls.

Fernández pointed to coincidences between what happened in the Bolivian elections and the primary elections in the Dominican Republic. He said that the errors in the system had to be corrected to avoid further electoral fraud.

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) recently said that there is no impediment for Fernández to run for president for the Partido de los Trabajadores Dominicanos (PTD). He was also proposed for president by the Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC) and the Fuerza Nacional Progresista (FNP) and the coalition of parties, Juntos Podemos.
