OIE releases report on IberoAmerican higher education

A report entitled “Diagnosis of Higher Education in Ibero-American 2019” issued by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OIE) calls for additional efforts to improve the quality of higher education in the region.

The report highlights that more women than men are enrolled in universities in the region. As far as the participation of women in the Dominican Republic is concerned, 63.88% of students are female. The DR has the highest number of women graduates with 65.7%. Other countries with 60%+ female graduates are Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Costa Rica and Brazil. In the region, the only country that does not have an enrolment of more than 50% women is Mexico with 49.86%.

The study revealed, nevertheless, that more women graduates do not translate into more women working in higher education. In all IberoAmerican countries, women make up less than 50% of the workforce.

The research shows that there has been an increase in students in social science areas and a decline in engineering, sciences, technology and mathematics students.

The OIE study revealed that enrollment in Dominican universities is up 22% from 2010 to the present day.

The Organization of Ibero-American States, formally the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture, is an international organization whose members are the Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking nations of the Americas and Europe and Equatorial Guinea in Africa.
