Big Dominican capos prefer to be extradited to the United States where over the years they have struck plea bargains with the US judiciary that have enabled them to get out early from jail. The capos then return to live in the Dominican Republic, enjoying their accumulated illicit wealth.
As per Dominican law, those that are tried in a court in the United States cannot be tried again for the same crimes in the Dominican Republic and the capos are free to go about their lives. Dominican justice establishes that for the capos to be extradited all charges need to be abandoned.
Recent emblematic cases of capos that benefited with deals in the United States and returned to enjoy their enormous wealth are Quirino Ernesto Paulino (El Don), Ramón Antonio del Rosario Puente (Toño Leña), José Arismendy Almonte Peña (Joselito.com), and Bienvenido Guevara Díaz (Maconi), N Digital reports.
A report in El Dia on 4 December 2019 makes reference to the recent case of accused drug capo Cesar Emilio Peralta who was captured in Colombia on 2 December 2019. El Dia explains that it is in the better interest of the Dominican Republic that Peralta be extradited to the United States from Colombia. The newspaper says that way the charges against him in the Dominican Republic can be heard in the future. When capos are extradited from the Dominican Republic, by law the Supreme Court of Justice has to clear the charges against them from their record in the country.
