
This 2019, malaria and dengue have reached the highest number of cases in 10 years, with almost 18,000 new cases in November. This is 20% higher than the 13,700 cases reported in the same month in 2015.
At the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital dengue is reaching the highest level of mortality in its history with 57 deaths attributed to dengue. According to the president elect of the Dominican Medical Guild (CMD) and podiatrist at the hospital, Waldo Ariel Suero, the children’s hospital has diagnosed 2,363 cases of dengue. He calls the number “unprecedented and scandalous.” He urged the Ministry of Public Health elevate efforts to fight the disease.
Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas attributed the high levels to the negligence of the doctors in applying the protocols.
