
The US corporation Apache is preparing to invest US$85 million to find natural gas off the southeastern coast of San Pedro de Macoris. The company has four years to explore and determine whether there are natural gas deposits worth exploiting.
Energy and Mining Minister Antonio Isa Conde noted that if the deposits prove out, 40% of the earning will go to the government, and the company can pay this in natural gas. The minister told reporters that while it is known that there are hydrocarbons in the sea bottom, yet whether they are commercially exploitable needs to be determined.
