Just politics, or will Samaná get its ports improved?

President Danilo Medina chaired a meeting in the Presidential Palace last week to evaluate the rehab of the ports of Samaná and Sabana de la Mar in the northeast to meet the needs of tourism and commerce. Presidential Minister Gustavo Montalvo explained to reporters that the authorities are looking at alternatives for the repair and modernization of the maritime port areas located on the southern and northern sides of the Samaná Bay.

There was no talk of renovating Sánchez port. The silt from the runoff of the Yuna River has affected the port of Sánchez, which during the 19th and early 20th centuries was the second most important port in the Dominican Republic.

Montalvo told reporters that the plan is to take advantage of the country’s extensive highway network, both on Samaná Peninsula, and throughout the eastern part of the country from Punta Cana to Sabana de la Mar.

The ministers of Defense, Tourism and Public Works and Communication, and the head of the Dominican Port Authority attended the meeting at the Presidential Palace.
