The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) announced that party secretary-general Carolina Mejía is the PRM’s choice for National District mayor. National District Mayor David Collado announced he would not seek a second term for mayor. Polls gave Collado a sure win if he had attempted to continue in the post. There is speculation PRM presidential candidate Luis Abinader could choose Collado for the vice presidential candidacy. Abinader is the candidate to beat, according to most polls.
Mejía is the daughter of former President Hipólito Mejía (2000-2004). The 50-year old economist was the vice-presidential candidate when Luis Abinader first ran for President in 2016-2020, losing to President Danilo Medina.
The other candidates registered for mayor for the National District include:
Domingo Contreras, Dominican Liberation Party (PLD); Hugo Beras, Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD); Bartolomé Pujals, Alianza País (AlPais); former mayor 79-year old Johnny Ventura, La Fuerza del Pueblo.
