Members of the Dominican Navy have arrested seven passengers and a supposed human trafficker when these attempted to travel in two boats from the northeastern community of Las Cañitas in Sabana de la Mar to Puerto Rico.
The supposed trafficker is identified as Esmerado Burgos Balbuena, who has been arrested on three other occasions by Naval Intelligence and charged for the same illicit activity.
The passengers were arrested and interrogated by Naval Intelligence at the head office in Los Mameyes, Santo Domingo East.
According to Naval spokesman, Captain José Geraldo Fajardo, land and sea patrols have been stepped up considerably in the east of the country, to combat the leaving of illegal voyages to Puerto Rico.
