While the presidential election campaign is not yet open, ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) candidate Gonzalo Castillo has been busy promising “lots of cash” to his followers. He was on the campaign trail on Friday, 20 December 2019, in Barahona making the promise. On Saturday, 21 December, he toured Hermanas Mirabal (Salcedo) province where he promised to double the number of presidential “surprise visits. ” He said he would add a Wednesday visit to the traditional Sunday visits by President Danilo Medina. He promised under his presidency lower interest rates and “more cash and jobs for the farmlands in the Cibao and the rest of the country.”
He forecast the PLD would win 70% of the city governments in the 16 February 2020 election. While in Hermanas Mirabal, he swore in the candidate to mayor for Salcedo, Maria Mercedes Ortiz; for Tenares, Enmanuel Escaño; and for Villa Tapia, Edwin Tejada.
