18% of some 1,000 drivers tested for alcohol over the last few days have shown positive in Greater Santo Domingo. Readers will note that the rules for serving alcoholic beverages have been suspended for the Christmas holidays, and, as a result, there are a lot of people driving with one, two or more drinks in their systems.
The Transportation and Traffic Safety Agency (Digesett) has set up inspections stations around the major cities. The National Transport Institute (Intrant) says driver tests are being carried out along Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln avenues, the Hermanas Mirabal road, the Juan Pablo II Highway (Santo Domingo-Samaná) and the San Isidro Expressway.
In the sample, drivers were first tested for the presence of alcohol and then tested for the level of alcohol. 50% tested above the legal limit. Of drivers tested, 75% had to be picked up by relatives or friends.
