Environmentalist Ramón Castillo Soto protests the installation of an asphalt processing plant in the farm area of Juma, San Isidro in Monseñor Nouel province. He said the plant is but 100 meters from a rice lab that operates in the area. He characterized the installation as an ecological crime. He said the plant would contaminate the Yuna River in Hato Viejo, rice production in the area and townships. He called for the Ministry of Environment and the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD) to take action. He said the plant does not have the necessary environmental permits and the owner of the plant, Danilo Jimenez, has continued the installation, supposedly with government support.
He made his comments on El Gobierno de la Tarde radio talk show. He encouraged the senator of Monseñor Nouel, Felix Nova, who is the president of the Environment Committee of the Senate, and the province’s deputies in Congress to act accordingly.
