Fireworks seized for safe New Year’s celebrations

The Ministry of the Interior and Police (MIP), through its Explosives and Fireworks Control Agency (DEFA), seized 1,628,423 units of fireworks and pyrotechnic games during operations in different parts of the country.

Ana Zayas, director of DEFA, reported that materials for manufacturing fireworks were confiscated nationwide. She said most operations to close down the clandestine factories took place in La Vega, Santiago, Espaillat, Hermanas Mirabal and Greater Santo Domingo.

Citizens are reminded that the use and marketing of these devices by unauthorized persons and companies is prohibited and punishable under Law 340-09 on the Control and Regularization of Fireworks. “Fireworks are prohibited for personal use. Only personnel from companies specializing in fireworks displays are authorized as established by the law.

The law dates back to 2009 when it passed after active campaigning by public hospital medics. The law has contributed to reduce the number of tragedies caused by the firework explosions.
