Rosario Espinal remarks on the effects on the population of dragged out electoral campaigning

Political analyst Rosario Espinal says that the early start of political campaigning could result in enhanced indifference on behalf of Dominican voters by the time the May 2020 election comes around. Dominicans were subjected to intensive campaigning, especially by government candidate Gonzalo Castillo in August, September and October for the 6 October 2019 primary.

The campaigning continues nationwide as the 16 February 2020 municipal elections approach. But then more campaigning continues, with the official opening of the congressional and presidential election scheduled for 17 May 2020. In the case of the presidential election, to win a candidate needs to receive 50%+1 of the vote. If not achieved, then a fourth election would be held on Sunday, 28 June 2020.

Espinal made a point of the effect on voters of the long, dragged out election period when saying it will have a greater impact on voters than the outcome of the February municipal election.

She says the 2020 elections are a challenge for the ruling party, the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) that has been in office for 16 consecutive years.
