
The rector of the Universidad Iberoamericana (Unibe), Julio Amado Castaños Guzmán, is recovering after suffering a transient ischemic attack on Saturday, 4 January 2020. A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a stroke that lasts only a few minutes. It happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is briefly blocked. Symptoms of a TIA are like other stroke symptoms but do not last as long.
He was transferred to the Hospital General Plaza de la Salud in Santo Domingo. Castaños Guzmán is also the president of the Plaza de la Salud board of directors. He is under observation at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital. He was flown by helicopter-ambulance to the hospital from San José de Ocoa.
Castaños Guzmán is a hematologist. He is the brother of the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Julio César, and of Servio Tulio, executive vice-president of the Institutionality and Justice Foundation (Finjus).
