US returned over 2,300 convicted felons in 2019

The United States Customs and Immigration Service has returned 2,308 convicted felons to the Dominican Republic over the past 12 months. This is the highest number over the past three years. El Nacional newspaper reported that several of the persons repatriated were released from prison after only serving part of their time.

Over half of those returned to the DR had been convicted of drug trafficking (1,233), 216 persons of homicides, 138 for assault and robbery, 61 for sex offenses, 121 for forging official documents, and some 520 for anything from the illegal possession of a firearm to traffic accidents. The persons had been imprisoned in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Antonio and Miami.
