The Navy reported on Tuesday, 7 January, the arrest of the suspected head organizer of clandestine boat trips in the south and the southeast of the Dominican Republic. Feliciano de Jesus is accused of orchestrating a fateful trip with 22 persons on 25 November 2019, when two people died off the coast of San Pedro de Macoris. Both were from Maimón, in the central province of Monseñor Nouel.
De Jesus is accused of charging RD$200,000 to RD$300,000 person for the illegal crossings to Puerto Rico. He was one of the most wanted illegal trip organizers.
The Navy revealed that to evade capture, De Jesus had devised unusual routes and was leaving from points such as Barahona, Azua, Peravia, Santo Domingo and San Pedro de Macoris. He had been brought to justice in 2015 for the same crime. He will be tried in San Pedro de Macoris.
