A day after she was appointed director of the Office of Special Programs of the Presidency, Karen Ricardo was on the campaign trail backing Luis Alberto Tejeda in his aspirations to be mayor for the ruling PLD in Santo Domingo East. Ricardo replaces Domingo Contreras in the position.
Contreras is the candidate to mayor for the ruling Dominican Liberation Party. Ricardo had aspired to be the PLD candidate to mayor for Santo Domingo East in the 6 October 2019 primary of the ruling party, losing to Tejeda.
Over the weekend, Tejeda also received the support of Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado, who is the president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD). The PRD has been an ally to President Danilo Medina since the start of his administration in 2012. In a rally over the weekend, Vargas Maldonado said the votes of the PRD members would decide the election of Santo Domingo East.
Tejeda’s main contender is Manuel Jiménez, who is running on the Revolutionary Modern Party (PRM) ticket.
