Hugo Beras’ promises to reduce traffic jams in the National District

Running for National District mayor on the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) ticket, Hugo Beras spoke up about capital city road changes he would back if elected mayor on 16 February 2020.

Beras promises to ban heavy cargo vehicles from circulating from 6am to 10pm. He also favors converting Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Tiradentes and Jose Ortega y Gasset into one-way avenues.

He described the capital city as chaotic, where people can’t even walk. He said the flow of traffic in the capital is a responsibility of the Mayor’s Office of the National District, as established by Mobility, Land Transport, Traffic and Road Safety Law 163-17.

He says he would use this authority to convert the Avenida de la Salud that passes to the south of Mirador del Sur Park into a pedestrian zone. “Contrary to the proposals to take space away from Parque Mirador to open up lanes for vehicles, we propose to close it off to vehicular traffic and integrate the Avenida de la Salud with the park space.
