Superior Electoral Court (TSE) overruled an earlier decision by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and ordered the electoral body to register the candidacy of vice mayor for the National District for Smailyn Gregoria Hilario Estrella (Hony Estrella). Estrella will run in the 16 February 2020 election alongside with the Force of the People candidate, merengue bandleader Johnny Ventura. Hony Estrella is an actor and radio talk show artist.
The problem was that her ID showed she lived and voted in Santo Domingo West and sought to run for the National District. The Central Electoral Board (JCE) had ruled that the ID established the residence of the candidate. The JCE required candidates to run only for the municipal district where they live, as established in the ID.
