The recent lows in temperatures and occasional rain has resulted in several rounds of the flu nationwide. Neumologist Plutarco Arias of the Unión Médica in Santiago says 30% of the patients seen at the hospital are affected by colds. He calls for prevention.
He recommends against the local practice of greeting people with a kiss or hug. He also says to keep prudent distances of two meters from people suffering a cough or cold. The former president of the Nothern Pneumology Society (Neymonorte) said that several patients have had to be hospitalized with pneumonia when their viral process were not treated in time.
