Citizen Participation has requested the Central Electoral Board (JCE) accredit 1,800 of its volunteers as election observers in the municipal elections of this 16 February 2020. The non-partisan civic movement is the Dominican chapter of Transparency International.
This request was made in compliance with the “Regulations for the Electoral Observation in the Ordinary General Elections of 2020” and the process of Electoral Observation 2020.
A Participación Ciudadana press release explains PC volunteers will carry out two types of electoral observation. One is an itinerant observation, where volunteers will visit different voting premises, observing the incidents in and around them. The other is the observation at a specific voting premise, where the observer will be assigned a place and will be able to see the incidents both outside and inside the polling station.
This is the eleventh time that Participación Ciudadana has carried out this initiative that seeks to ensure respect for democracy and the popular will at the polls. Since its first electoral observation in 1996, more than 60,000 volunteers have worked for the civic watchdog movement.
