National District candidates’ positions on key city issues

The municipal elections are set for Sunday, 16 February 2020. The contenders in the National District are presenting their proposals on new platforms, such as Radio Intec, the Santo Domingo Economic and Social Council (Codessd) and the Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) debates. Hoy gives a comparative rundown of several of the positions of the candidates in a feature on 29 January 2020.

Carolina Mejía is best known as the daughter of former President Hipólito Mejía (2000-2004). She has the backing of incumbent mayor David Collado. She is running on the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) ticket.

Domingo Contreras is running for the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). He sought the nomination in 2016, but lost the party nomination to Roberto Salcedo, who sought a fourth term. Salcedo was defeated by David Collado, who has declined running for a second term as mayor.

Johnny Ventura seeks a second term as Mayor. He was mayor from 1998 to 2002, when he ran for the PRD. He is the candidate for La Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), the party led by ex-President Leonel Fernandez.

Hugo Beras is a former communications director for the Ministry of Foreign Relations. He is running for the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD).

Bartolomé Pujals is a 33-year old lawyer and professor at the PUCMM who made a name for himself as a Marcha Verde activist. He is the candidate for the Alianza País (AP) party.
