Hugo Beras, who on Monday, 3 February 2020 declined running for mayor of the National District for the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), announced his support to the political aspirations of National District Mayor David Collado. Collado as of Monday, 3 February 2020 had not announced his political plans. Beras’s resignation comes just 13 days before the municipal elections.
Polls had showed that Collado was likely to be reelected if he had run for a second term as mayor of the National District. Collado has yet to announced his political plans. In the meantime, he had backed Carolina Mejía, secretary-general of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), who is now running for mayor for the PRM.
The information was shared on Twitter by Beras, who thanked Collado for opening the doors to a new generation of politicians. “Thanks to the entrepreneur @DavidColladoM for having opened the doors to a new generation that believes in doing politics differently, betting on transparency, ethics and good values. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your political team from today,” said Beras in his brief message.
Beras would later issue a press note stating:
“That we the good ones are more, that we can and that Santo Domingo will continue on the right path,” he said. “In politics there are things that are seen and things that are not seen,” he added. He thanked the President of the PRD, Miguel Vargas, and his fellow party members for the opportunity and the trust they had placed in him.
