It’s official: MLB comes to Santo Domingo in March

On 7 March 2020 there will be Major League baseball played at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Ballpark as part of spring training. The game will be played on Saturday afternoon, 7 March. The last time that MLB staged a pre-season game in the DR was in 2000, when the Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros played.

The two MLB teams will be the Detroit Tigers and the Minnesota Twins. The Tigers and Twins are two of the major league teams with the most Dominican players on their rosters.

The MLB and the Juan Marichal Ballpark Patronage is organizing the game. Eduardo Najri of the patronage, and who is also a vice-president of the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Professional Winter League, told reporters that work began on Monday, 3 February to improve the ball park to receive the MLB teams.

Minnesota stars including Nelson Cruz, Miguel Sano, Jorge Polanco and Fernando Romero will be coming for spring training. From Detroit, on their roster are Dominican infielders Jeimer Candelario, Sergio Alcantara, Dawell Lugo and outfielders Victor Reyes and Willi Castro. Pitchers Jose Cisnero, Ivan Nova and Gregory Soto are mentioned as coming to play in Santo Domingo.
