President Danilo Medina received the La Romana’s Los Toros del Este team heads at the Presidential Palace to congratulate them for bringing home the 2020 Caribbean Series championship. On Friday, 7 February 2020, the Dominican Republic defeated Venezuela 9-3 for the regional championship. The DR had won all its matches in the series, except a first game against Venezuela.
The Dominican Republic had not won a championship since 2012. The Los Toros won the regular season, the local playoffs and then all but one of their games in the Caribbean Series for a total of 57 victories and 26 losses.
The Caribbean Series this year was played at the Hiram Bithorn ballpark in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Los Toros del Este team manager, Puerto Rican Lino Rivera, must have had mixed feelings. On Saturday, 7 February 2020 he won his first Caribbean Series. But it was not for managing a Puerto Rican team. It was for managing Los Toros del Este, representing the Dominican Republic. Rivera had previously managed four Puerto Rican teams but never was able to clinch a victory.
Rivera described the win as the best thing to happen to him. He said the team had the talent, know how to win and meet adversity. “We did it,” he said. He said it was the best team he had managed in his life.
The 2020 Caribbean Series was played among the winners of the baseball championships in Puerto Rico (Cangrejeros de Santurce), Mexico (Tomateros de Culiacán), Venezuela (Cardenales de Lara), Panama (Astronautas de Chiquirí) and Colombia (Vaqueros de Montería) and the Dominican Republic (Toros del Este).
