Hacienda (Treasury) Minister Donald Guerrero announced that the Punta Catalina power thermoelectric power plant will be inaugurated in late February. The Medina administration has plans to sell the power plant as soon as both units are in operation. Guerrero said the government expects in the next 60 to 90 days to receive offers from groups interested in participating in the tender of half of the shares for the power plant. The government has hired Guggenheim Securities for the procedure. He argued the entry into operation of the two power plants will reduce energy costs.
Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) opposition candidate Luis Abinader has spoken up against the sale of the shares before the change of government.
The Punta Catalina coal-fired twin power plant is under construction in Punta Catalina-Hatillo, Azua. With an installed capacity to generate 770 megawatts, the power plant is the Medina administration’s most costly public infrastructure work. The power plant has been highly controversial in the contracting of Odebrecht and the lack of transparency in its construction and financing. Construction began in 2015, but delays have pushed the completion date back to this 2020.
