Iris Guaba’s call to attack journalists causes social media uproar

Journalist Huchi Lora suffered a bad fall last week, but that did not save him from being the target of Social Plan of the Presidency director Iris Guaba, who ordered social media influencers on pay by the state to attack the communicator online. The audio of the statement was leaked to social media and became the talk of the town.

Iris Guaba admitted the derogatory statements were her own. She was responding to a leak whereby her office was purchasing RD$380 million in household appliances for distribution in this electoral year.

Huchi Lora, Altagracia Salazar and Orlando Jorge Mera, mentioned in the statement by Guaba, all responded to the recording. Lora and Salazar said the request made by Guaba to those on the state payroll said the statements were not the exception, but the norm regarding the lack of tolerance in the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) when it comes to criticism by the press.

In an unprecedented new development, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) cited President Danilo Medina and Iris Guaba to a hearing on Tuesday, 11 February 2020. The court was responding to a petition presented by the minority political party, Frente Amplio. The Frente Amplio filed a legal recourse against President Medina and the director of the Social Plan, Iris Guaba, for allegedly violating Resolution 33-2019, issued by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) on 28 November 2019, which regulates the participation of public officials in the ordinary elections of 2020.
