
There are 32 senators in the Dominican Republic, one for each of 31 provinces and another for the National District. The National Budget set aside RD$2.53 billion for the senators. Diario Libre reports that in just the first half of 2019, the legislators spent RD$2.2 billion of the total allotment, or 89%. The expenditures for the second half of the year are not disclosed on the Senate website. The senators spent RD$46 million on food and drinks for the first half of the year. The legislators received RD$25 million for fuel expenditures and RD$60 million for a chapter labeled as “other rentals.”
