People’s Force (FP) politician Bautista Rojas Gómez revealed that in the Sunday, 16 February 2020 municipal election that organization will not get many votes because they have decided to support more than 100 candidates of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). The People’s Force was created after the president of the PLD, former President Leonel Fernández, split from the party on 20 October, complaining he had been victim of fraud in the 6 October 2020 party primary.
“So, many of the votes of Fuerza del Pueblo, on this occasion, will go to support important municipal and municipal district candidates of the old party, because they are former comrades who deserve respect, our solidarity and our accompaniment,” said Rojas Gómez when interviewed on the program Cuentas Claras, which is broadcast on La Nota 95.7 FM.
The politician insisted that in Sunday’s elections, they will not reach a high percentage of votes, “but, apart from making these former comrades win, we are going to win many municipalities and municipal districts.
While many Fernández close followers left the party, others that had strong possibilities of winning at the municipal and congressional levels chose to continue to run on the PLD ticket. Such are the cases of Abel Martínez who is running for mayor in Santiago, and Carlos Guzmán, who is running for mayor for Santo Domingo North. Likewise, senators Amarilis Santana for La Romana, Felix Bautista for San Juan de la Maguana, José Rafael Vargas for Espaillat, among others.
Meanwhile, the acting president of the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) Eddy Alcantara expressed his concern about Rojas Gómez’s statement. The PRSC had allied with the FP to promote several joint candidacies, including that of former President Leonel Fernández. The PRSC urged not to vote for “avocado candidates”. The name refers to those that are purple (the color of the PLD) outside and green (the color of the FP) inside, or those that are partisan to Fernández, but stayed in the PLD.
19 February is the deadline for political parties to register their open alliances.
