UNFPA and Good Neighbors work to reduce teen pregnancies in San Jose de Ocoa

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the non-profit humanitarian organization Good Neighbors, announced the start of a project that seeks to empower teenagers in Sabana Larga, San José de Ocoa province, and reduce the number of girls becoming victims of violence, youth marriages or early cohabitation and teen pregnancies.

From January to December 2019, 170 girls and adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years gave birth in public hospitals in San José de Ocoa, or 22% of the female population. This is 3% less than the more alarming national average of 25%.

Seeking to reduce these alarming figures, the initiative aims to address the issue of early marriages, unions and pregnancies in a comprehensive manner and to promote the guarantee of human rights, sexual and reproductive health and gender equality.
