JCE requests assistance from IFES and UNIORE to explain municipal election failure

The plenary session of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) after a meeting on Tuesday, 18 February 2020 said that it has requested technical assistance from both the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) and the Inter-American Union of Electoral Organizations (UNIORE) to determine the reasons leading to the electronic voting glitch on Sunday, 16 February 2020, municipal election day.

Both IFES and UNIORE have deployed observation missions to the Dominican Republic for the municipal election. The JCE has called for these now to be held Sunday, 15 March. The election was called off at 11:11am after the problems affecting the uploading of opposition candidate ballots to the automated voting system were not able to be resolved in time for the Sunday voting. The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) revealed in a closed-door meeting with political delegates that was leaked that quality controls had not been implemented.

The JCE says it has also requested that the Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States keep a presence in the country until the conclusion of the 2020 general elections, including the presidential and congressional election in May.
