There are reports that the Medina administration is again postponing the inauguration of the Punta Catalina coal-fired 770-megawatt power thermoelectric plant that had been set for 20 February 2020. Technical problems affected the operation of the power plant on Monday, 17 February, tripping it off the national power grid, and causing a major outage nationwide.
The Presidency gives as the rationale for the postponement that it is complying with the electoral law ruling that states that public works cannot be inaugurated within a 40-day window prior to a municipal election and 60 days prior to a presidential election.
The power plant is the largest investment made by the Medina Administration in its eight years in government. The power plant has been highly controversial by contracting Odebrecht to build it and the lack of transparency in its construction and financing. Construction began in 2015, but delays have pushed the completion date to 2020.
