
64-year old former banker Ramón Báez Figueroa was admitted to the Corazones Unidos clinic in Santo Domingo after suffering a heart attack. This was confirmed by his cardiologist, Dr. Pedro Ureña.
Báez Figueroa was the CEO of Banco Intercontinental (Banínter) from 1993 until its collapse in 2003. He was also president of the publishing house Listín Diario, owner of the television stations Telecanal and Supercanal, Aster Communications LDT, among others.
After the collapse of the bank, Báez was sentenced to ten years in jail. He served five years in jail charged with masterminding the country’s most spectacular banking fraud scandal.
