US Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS) Carlos Trujillo met with President Danilo Medina at the Presidential Palace on 3 March 2020. His visit is at a time when an OAS mission has been commissioned to find answers to what caused the e-voting glitch that resulted in the annulling of the municipal election on 16 February 2020. The OAS will be sending observer missions to the municipal election now rescheduled for 15 March 2020.
The visit is also two weeks before the vote for the reelection of Luis Almagro or election of another candidate to the regional organization. The United States funds around 60% of the OAS expenditures.
Accompanying President Danilo Medina at the meeting was Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado and legal advisor to the President, Flavio Darío Espinal, himself a former Dominican ambassador to the OAS.
The Dominican people and the government have been critical of Luis Almagro. In 2015, speaking for the OAS, he said on a CNN interview that Haiti and the Dominican Republic were “one island, one country.”
