10 March 2020 is deadline to announce vice presidential candidates

Tuesday, 10 March 2020, is the deadline for presidential candidates to announce their running mates. The deadline had been 3 March, but it was extended to 10 March after the rescheduling of the municipal election to 15 March.

A poll by the Cibao Economic Center mentions TV host Milagros German, deputy Victor (Ito) Bisonó, the president of the Modern Revolutionary Party, José Ignacio Paliza and lawyer-business woman Marisol Vicens as possible vice presidential candidates for Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Bisonó has declined running for Vice President.

The ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) recently announced that Gonzalo Castillo’s running mate will be Vice President Margarita Cedeño. Cedeño has served as Vice President during the two terms of President Danilo Medina (2012-2016 and 2016-2020). She is married to former President Leonel Fernández and served as First Lady during Fernández’s presidencies in 2004-2008 and 2008-2012.

Former President Leonel Fernández, now the presidential candidate for the People’s Force (FP) political party, appears in third place in the recent Greenberg-Diario Libre poll. He has yet to announce his running mate. Candidates that have been mentioned are former Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, former National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso, and former Attorney General Radhames Jimenez.
