13 Dominican women recognized on International Women’s Day

President Danilo Medina awarded the Medal of Merit at the Presidential Palace on Friday, 6 March 2020 to 13 Dominican women for their contributions to society. The event was on occasion of the celebration of International Women’s Day on Sunday, 8 March. The merit medals were awarded by Decree 98-20. Present was First Lady Candida Montilla, Vice President Margarita Cedeño and Women’s Minister Janet Camilo in addition to President Danilo Medina.

The award winners are:
Prisilla Rivera, captain of the national senior women’s volleyball player.
Publisher Patricia de Moya, for the long-term success of her Mercado Magazine.
Mary Kasse, for her political work.
Lawyer Mercedes Lora for her contributions to women’s rights.
Scientist Agripina Ramírez for her contributions to biodiversity and environmental management.
Lawyer Rhadys Iris Abreu Blondet for her work as a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 2007 to 2012, and for her diplomatic career in the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
Colonel Ana Matos, the first woman in charge of gender in the Navy, received the merit as a military professional for her contributions to promote the role of women in the Armed Forces, and the adaptation of military uniforms for women.
Social worker Tamarah Santana for her 23 years of community work.
Teacher Iluminada Virgen Concepcion for her vocation as a public school teacher.
Gianni Paulino for her philanthropic work for seniors.
María Altagracia Tejeda for her contributions to rural women.
Germana Quintana in the Arts category for her long-standing career in theater.
Lourdes M. Ventura for her outstanding contributions to the diaspora. On 1 January 2020, she became the first descendant of Dominican immigrants to occupy the position of Judge of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, in the 11th Judicial District of Queens County.
