The Cibao International Airport is sponsoring a series of demonstrations and talks in all of the school surrounding and near the airport that are centered on the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse and recycling. The program focuses on reducing the impact of solid waste on the environment and is called “Operation Zero Plastic.”
Speakers from the airport staff are talking to school directors and the students regarding the huge importance of reducing the presence of plastic in the solid waste stream of each household. Speakers seek to raise the awareness that so far only 5% of the plastics used in the country are recycled and that the rest finds its way into rivers and streams as well as the ocean.
A sort of competition as to which school can gather the most plastic between now and the end of the school year is part of the pro-recycling efforts.
The plan is underway and students have been provided with SuperBags to collect the plastic. The plastic collected will then go to one of the local recycling companies in Santiago.
