Five Dominican university students on scholarship in Wuhan, China finally returned to the Dominican Republic on Saturday, 7 March 2020 in the morning. The students underwent an ordeal after being stuck in Wuhan, a city under quarantine after the COVID-19 virus emerged there.
The Dominican students were evacuated to Ukraine, where they remained in quarantine until flying home via Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo. The students were cleared to return to their homes, ending their saga. The students had tested negative to the virus prior to leaving Ukraine.
The students arrived on a Delta flight from New York. They were received personally by Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas, Deputy Minister of Foreign Relations for Bilateral Affairs Peggy Cabral and a representative of the Pan American Health Organization.
John Hernández, one of the students, thanked the Ukrainian authorities for their hospitality. The students remained in quarantine at a sanitary center for two weeks.
Deputy Minister Peggy Cabral said that the evacuation of the students was a difficult task. “Thank God the young people are here, healthy, and happy to meet with their families,” she said.
Public Health Minister Cardenas Sánchez said the ministry would stay in touch with the students.
