Recently, the Jesuit priest-backed movement, Centro Juan XXIII called for the removal of Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez. The John XXIII Center has asked President Danilo Medina to remove the nation’s prosecutor “as a gesture of goodwill and to back up with actions his words in his 27 February speech” on Independence Day.

The organization, in a statement to the country, showed concern for the situation caused by the failed municipal elections on 16 February 2020. The elections were annulled by the Central Electoral Board (JCE) after the collapse of the automated voting system, generating a crisis of credibility.

The John XXIII Center expressed its support to the citizens who demand respect for their rights, in the name of democracy and the right to vote. They also reject impunity.

The organization believes that these civic demands contribute to the strengthening of public institutions.

By law, the Attorney General presides over the Superior Council of the Public Ministry that is in charge of appointing prosecutors, including the electoral prosecutor. There is widespread opposition to the Attorney General Office naming of the electoral prosecutor, on grounds that Attorney General Jean Alain Rodriguez has not shown independence of criteria in his actions taken to combat corruption.
