The “Interceptor 004” has arrived to take on the task of eliminating plastic contamination in the Ozama River. The ship collects plastics when these are carried downstream by river currents. This prevents the waste from reaching the Caribbean Sea. Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo says the ship is here after the Presidency signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Ocean Cleanup. The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands is also backing the waste elimination program.
Montalvo explained the boat arrived on Sunday morning in the Dominican Republic. It is one of four boats that exist in the world that operate autonomously using solar energy. The ship has been assigned to the Dominican Armada (Navy).
