Yeni Berenice Reynoso says she is disputing recent actions by the Attorney General and declines running for electoral prosecutor

Former Santiago and National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso says she could not accept being considered for the role of electoral prosecutor because of the legal recourse she is part of submitting against actions in the Public Ministry. Reynoso has participated with 17 other career prosecutors in a case filed with the Superior Administrative Court against a recent contest to name new incumbents to important prosecutor positions nationwide. The contest is the second overhaul of the nation’s prosecution department in less than two years carried out by Attorney General Jean Alain Rodríguez.

The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) that in these elections has allied with the People’s Force (FP) of former President Leonel Fernández, proposed Reynoso for the position of electoral prosecutor on Saturday, 8 March during a meeting of political parties and government sponsored by the Economic and Social Council (CES), a dependency of the Ministry of the Presidency.

The proposal was rejected by high-ranking Medina administration officers that insist that the political parties can only suggest names but the decision as to who is chosen is by law the responsibility of the Superior Council of the Public Ministry that is under the Attorney General jurisdiction. Opposition political parties have said the position of electoral prosecutor needs to be chosen by consensus.
