70-year old deputy Ginette Bournigal (PRM-Puerto Plata) announced she will run for senator for the province. The position is currently held by Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) president José Ignacio Paliza, who announced he would not seek to be re-elected. Paliza earlier had stated he would not be Abinader’s running mate. Indeed, Paliza is a dual citizen (Spain and the Dominican Republic), and thus is impeded by the Constitution from running for President or Vice President.
There is speculation he would occupy an important position in the Abinader cabinet.
Bournigal had served as senator for 1998-2002 and also as governor of Puerto Plata from 2002-2004. She is married to engineer Miguel Jimenez Messón.
