Public Health Minister Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas explained that the extraordinary municipal election scheduled for Sunday, 15 March 2020 would not be compromised by the Covid-19 virus because so far there has been no community spread in the country. The Health Minister maintains that the country’s first six confirmed cases have all been imported.
“A voting day is long and there is time for people to organize… and if things are organized people vote and they don’t have to be rubbing shoulders or being crowded and it can be done. The thing is that we carry out this process in an orderly manner and it is also an obligation,” said the Health Minister.
Sánchez Cárdenas urged the public to continue with hygiene measures, that he says is the best way to avoid community transmission. “The virus does not float around like a cloud infecting people, it is direct contact with the person,” he said.
2020 is an electoral year. On 15 March the municipal election is scheduled, and on 17 May, the congressional and presidential elections.
