Classes called off on Friday for municipal elections

Public schools and universities become polling places every four years for the general elections. On the occasion of the extraordinary municipal election set for Sunday, 15 March 2020, the Ministry of Education called for public schools to close so that the set up of the voting equipment can be carried out on Friday and Saturday in time for the Sunday election. Schools are expected to resume on Tuesday, after the cleanup of the installations on Monday.

Nearly 7.5 million voters are called to the polls to elect 158 mayors, an equal number of deputy mayors, 1,164 councilmen and their alternates, 235 directors and deputy directors and 735 members.

The municipal authorities are scheduled then to take office on 24 April 2020 for a four-year term.
