Medina administration suspends flights from Europe

Presidency Minister Gustavo Montalvo announced during a press conference on Saturday, 14 March 2020, that all flights from Europe are suspended to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the country. So far an estimated 11 cases have been confirmed, all imported from abroad.

The Dominican Republic has the most air connections of any country in Central America and the Caribbean. The announcement comes shortly after the United States government canceled flights from Europe. The travel restriction goes into effect as of 6 am on Monday, 16 March 2020. Europe is the second most important source market for tourists for the Dominican Republic.

Likewise, Victor Gomez Casanova, director of the Port Authority, announced that all cruise ship travel is now banned. He announced that the last cruise ships to arrive were two that picked up and dropped off passengers at the Port of La Romana on Sunday, 15 March. Most cruise ship lines had already announced cancelation of trips.

The Medina administration announced a ban on foreign travel by government officials.
